Man Bites Dog is terrific. Not only blackly funny but visionary as it was made many years before the whole reality TV craze took off.
Can't believe people are putting Kill Bill in this list... okay I admit Uma is annoying and you kinda wished that girl with the ball and chain split her head open in the first film, but it's still a good double feature...
And the first Starship Troopers is cool, but you have to read between the lines a bit to get the most out of it. Probably the most clever anti-war film ever made.
Okay, bad films:
There are several bad films out there, lots of obscure z-grade stuff I could name obviously, but just sticking to films with big budgets here, that maybe COULD have been better:
Battlefield Earth - hahahahahilarious, note that every shot in this film is on an angle! Every single one! It's like the cinematographer took some amateur film course that said "to create tension, try placing some shots with the horizon on an angle" so he did it for EVERY SINGLE SHOT. Argh. There are plenty of other reasons why this film is crap, but that's one of them. Oh, yeah...erm, hail Xenu.
Armageddon - more terrible cinematography. The camera never stops moving, and there's barely a cut more than 2 seconds long in the entire thing. Should have a seizure warning or something like computer games do. Plus is pathetic Hollywood crud but then, you knew that.
From Dusk Till Dawn - brilliant for the first half (obviously the bit Tarantino was responsible for the scripting of), then it turns into an incredibly lame, stupid, cliched zombie film. There are good zombie films but this is not one of them. I was expecting big things from this. Not the worst film ever made but certainly the most dissapointing, at least for me.
Waking Life - I don't think I've seen anything more boring, ever. I also don't think I've been so visually amazed and bored at the same time. Oh hang on, yes I have. Most computer games these days are all about prettiness with virtually no sensible content. Just like this film.
There's more, but those are the ones that spring to mind.
